The Associated Press reported on November 24 that Gert Mittring, 38, needed only 11.8 seconds to calculate the 13th root of a 100-digit number in his head at a math museum in Giessen, a small town, located in western Germany. I'm not sure what amazes me more: calculating the 13th root of a 100-digit number in your head, or the fact that math museums exist. Apparently, they really do. Looks like fun!

I've created a sort of online program library for the Korg Ampworks Bass modeling signal processor. If you're familiar with this unit, you know it sounds great but only stores two programs at a time. If you want to "store" more than two programs, you have to document the extra programs somewhere else. Korg supplies a paper template to do this, which is thoughtful of them, but I'm not wild about writing my programs down by hand. So I figured why not create a little online database where Ampworks Bass users can document and store their favorite programs. It's simple and primitive, but I think it does the trick. The scripts I used came from EZscripting.co.uk.

This weekend I decided to create a page for my music gear. I have an assortment of basses, guitars, effects, and other gadgets, and thought it might be helpful if I posted some comments about each of them. Hopefully, with Christmas around the corner, I'll have some more gear to comment on soon.

If you like experimenting with music, or would like to try experimenting with music, visit repercussion.org. All you need to succeed is Flash 6 and some curiousity. Just click and drag on stuff to create free-form musical loops. Sound vague? Well, you have to see it to believe it. All I can say is it's a visual interface that you manipulate to create different beats, rhythms and melodies. According to the about page, this project has been around for over a year (late to the party, I am) and is the work of one very talented Carla Diana.
